{"id":3110,"date":"2025-05-21T21:03:20","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T17:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artsakhforum.net\/?p=3110"},"modified":"2025-05-21T21:03:21","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T17:03:21","slug":"anca-welcomes-launch-of-swiss-peace-initiative-for-nagorno-karabakh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsakhforum.net\/?p=3110","title":{"rendered":"ANCA Welcomes Launch of Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno Karabakh"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>May 26th Forum in Bern Aims to Secure Right of Return for Displaced Artsakh Armenians<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WASHINGTON, DC \u2013<\/strong>&nbsp;The Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) welcomes the May 26th launch of the \u201cSwiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno-Karabakh\u201d \u2013 a groundbreaking, cross-party initiative by Swiss Parliamentarians to advance the Swiss government\u2019s decision to establish an international platform to facilitate the safe and dignified return of Artsakh\u2019s indigenous Armenian population, displaced during Azerbaijan\u2019s 2023 military assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ANCA deeply appreciates Switzerland\u2019s principled stand for the fundamental rights of Artsakh\u2019s Armenian population \u2013 particularly their right to live in peace and dignity on their ancestral homeland,\u201d stated&nbsp;<strong>Aram Hamparian<\/strong>, Executive Director of the ANCA. \u201cWe welcome this initiative as a timely and meaningful step forward in reversing Azerbaijan\u2019s 2023 genocide and restoring justice for the displaced Armenians of Artsakh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Swiss Peace Initiative for Nagorno-Karabakh builds upon&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parlament.ch\/de\/ratsbetrieb\/suche-curia-vista\/geschaeft?AffairId=20244259\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Motion No. 24.4259<\/strong><\/a>, adopted by the Swiss National Council in December 2024 and by the Council of States in March 2025. The motion mandates the Swiss Federal Council to convene a peace forum that fosters dialogue between Azerbaijan and representatives of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians under international supervision, with the goal of ensuring their right of return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>National Councillor Erich Vontobel (EDU), a lead co-sponsor of the motion and Co-Chair of the new initiative, emphasized Switzerland\u2019s unique role. \u201cThe refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh feel abandoned and need our solidarity. Switzerland\u2019s good offices are called for here,\u201d\u00a0stated Vontobel\u00a0upon the National Council&#8217;s adoption in December. \u201cThe chances of this forum becoming a reality have increased today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the Council of States\u2019 March 18, 2025, approval, National Councillor Stefan M\u00fcller-Altermatt (Center), Co-Chair of the new initiative and Co-President of the Switzerland-Armenia Parliamentary Group,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csi-int.org\/news\/swiss-council-of-states-approves-peace-forum-for-nagorno-karabakh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>noted<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cThe adoption of the motion sends an important signal and gives Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians renewed hope for return. We have gained many friends today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christian Solidarity International (CSI) President\u00a0<strong>Dr. John Eibner<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csi-int.org\/news\/swiss-peace-initiative-for-nagorno-karabakh-to-launch-in-bern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>welcomed the development<\/strong><\/a>, stating, \u201cThe conflict between Azerbaijan and the now expelled population of Nagorno-Karabakh threatens regional security, obstructs Eurasian economic development, and takes a terrible toll on human rights and dignity. CSI applauds the formation of this committee. It reflects the will of Switzerland to adhere to its tradition of neutrality, humanitarianism, and conflict resolution and to generate domestic and international support for the rights of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ken Hachikian<\/strong>, Chair of the Armenian Legal Center for Justice and Human Rights (ALC), also hailed the effort. \u201cThe Swiss Peace Initiative represents a vital advancement in the global recognition of the Artsakh Armenians\u2019 internationally protected right of return,\u201d stated Hachikian. \u201cBy creating a formal, international framework for dialogue and accountability, this effort helps counter impunity and affirms the legal rights of a people forcibly displaced from their ancestral homeland. Featured speakers will include National Councillor&nbsp;<strong>Erich Vontobel<\/strong>&nbsp;and National Councillor&nbsp;<strong>Stefan M\u00fcller-Altermatt<\/strong>;&nbsp;<strong>Vartan Oskanian<\/strong>, former Foreign Minister of Armenia and current Chairman of the Committee for the Defense of the Fundamental Rights of the People of Nagorno Karabakh;&nbsp;<strong>Vardan Tadevosyan<\/strong>, Director of the Lady Cox Rehabilitation Center;&nbsp;<strong>Sarkis Shahinian<\/strong>, General Secretary of the Parliamentary Friendship Group Switzerland-Armenia; and&nbsp;<strong>Dr. Joel Veldkamp<\/strong>, Director for Public Advocacy at Christian Solidarity International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week,&nbsp;<strong>National Councillor<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Vontobel<\/strong>&nbsp;traveled to Armenia to meet with Artsakh&nbsp;<strong>President Samvel Shahramanyan<\/strong>&nbsp;and His Holiness Karekin II to discuss the next steps for the initiative.
